1st Cyclocross race of the year.

Mom, cyclocross is road bikes w/ big knobby tires that go offroad. Its generally crazy and fun. Its shorted to cx.

Check this out: there were 150 starters in cat 3 cx today. It was insane. There were about 50, 50!, single speeders. The promoter came up to us and asked who should start first, geared or ss ers. The SSers were very loud and one of them yells out: "feats of strength!" So the promoter, whom I had met at his velo studio a couple weeks ago, asks me to compete. So I had to indian leg wrestle a SSer to determine who would start first. The SSer who piped up was 160 lbs and 5'5". We laid head to foot on the side of the road with everyone watching. Everyone was cheering and then everyone joined in on the countdown. 1,2,3! I crushed that kid, sent him tumbling through the ditch. Wasnt even close. I got the #1 callout! Front row start saved my race.

I was 3rd into the hole shot and one dude overcooked a corner and smashed his head into a jeep grand cherokee. Awesome. I was wearing the Contour HD helmet cam and hope that I picked that part up. Hope to have it up on youtube soon.

I was feeling cooked from my 70 mile ride yesterday and just had no pop. I wore the Cal kit and go many many GO BEARS hoots. It was tight. I ended up 12th ish on my tired wheels. Once I move to tubulars where I am not terrified that I am going to pinch flat, I'll be able to be more aggressive. Star crossed next saturday.

One last thing, cross is really hard. YOu just suffer the entire time. Time to get on the rollers for some 2 mins on 2 mins off intervals.

Very happy about this week's forecast here in Seattle. I dis one roller ride last week in preparation for cross. I got home late and it was already dark. I don't want to do too many more of those.

This was the shower in my hotel room in Enmasse, France. Just outside
of Geneva, it took me about 35 minutes to drive into Geneva on the
crazy non-gridded roads. I don't know how anyone survives without a
gps in Europe. I managed by loading turn by turn directions into my
ipad. With no moving wifi connection, I had to make certain that I
didn't miss a turn or I would literally be off my caches map.
Needless to say, it was quite a challenge.

Wick was wearing the nastiest shorts I have ever seen. Serious,
grease, paint, holes, and they were way too short for any man.
Period. Despite the fact that they were absolutely disgusting, the
fact that their inseam was only 4 inches made me question his sexuality.

So we went into walmart. The lady working textiles was appalled at
his shorts. She said "you ain't ever gonna get any wearing those
nasty shorts"

I bought him $10 walmart madras. He relectantly let me throw the
nasty pair in the trash.

Raquel dropped her iPhone and the screen cracked. Shame. We were
very lucky to watch an electrical engineer who now makes pool cues
replace the glass. It was $15 in parts. Apple charges $200 to do
this. I have found my new part time job.

Adam picked me up from the airport, let me crash at his pad, and took me out to dinner. Awesome. Don't blame him that he went to an inferior school.

Long history in this race. Yup, that's pirate booty.

Horrible placing with one lap to go. I was probaby 50th place. There was a crash with 3 turns left. I somehow managed to stay out of that mess. Then the group swung left and then right twice. On the second swing left, I just stayed right and had a wide open path from probably 30th place. The group barrelled towards the final 180 degree turn and I managed to move into top 15 before a guy swung out right directly in front of me. So I had to settle for a sprint from 15th placed. Managed to pick my way up to 8th place. Not a bad result considering the 80 person cat 2 only field. I'll take it and the $60.

Should be ready to go next week at Fitchburg.

Thanks to Pouncy for hooking me up with this sweet telemetry. He took my SRM power data, coupled it to his Garmin Edge 705 and helmet camera. Wow. How cool is this?

I am easily discerned as the largest rider in the group. Elliot Craddock is easy to spot in the light blue Garmin kit. If you turn up your volume, you can hear me talk to Dave about being on youtube and talking about how good I look.

This kind of thing is one of the reasons I love racing. Look at how far home production has come with relatively inexpensive equipment.
