Big Day

There are a million things to blog about. 1st, let me declare this: BUY THE ABOVE MOVIE: SEASONS from the Collective. IT rocks. Whenever you dont have time to ride, put this in and it'll make you feel like a jerk for not riding. Its ultra motivating and prob some of the best cinematography you'll see this year.

Second, Tyler Hamilton won USPro Road Race and is the US National Champ. Rock Racing wins the jersey and he'll wear it all next year as a 38 year old. I have mixed emotions but want to hear what you have to think. Post your comment below.

I was just out for a nice tune up spin today and saw an M5 wasting rubber on a windy 2 mile climb. For those who dont know, twin turbos isnt about bikes. My 335 has been sitting outside (shame on me, I know wick) for a month and lost it's Alaska plate the other day. I feel like I have stripped it of its identity. Its a damn shame that a CA plate will soon deface the rear of the car. At least I was able to get a Navy Vet plate. Thats cool. But I think that I am going to have to burn up some rubber myself soon. More on that in the coming weeks.



Lastly, Metromint Giro di San Francisco is tomorrow for me. I'm stoked. Check out the race course.

TT rewards

So many of you know that bike racing is by no means a glamorous sport. Most of it is tearing up tires around some silly industrial park or other paved way only to win just enough cash to cover your entry fee. That's fine. We are a weird bunch. But occasionally some bike racers (only on the largest stages) are compensated in different or more rich ways. This pic of Christian Vande Velde (taken by Casey Gibson at Time Trial Nats) is one of those rare moments.

First week of school complete. It was actually 90 degrees here
today. That equals really hot. The biggest problem there is that UC
Berkeley doesn't believe in ac. Not good for this kid from alaska.

I went to the Doc yesterday and he gave me the go ahead to start training again. He was amazed that the swelling of my "business" had decreased so dramatically. I was relieved. Seriously, grapefruit sized tackle is no way to live your life. So I rode my bike today and it was glorious. I guess that I'm a serious risk taker because I rode on the Wolf SL fork that has been recalled. Rob, am I supposed to overnight that thing to Dani? I can never catch him on the phone.

I only rode 18 miles. But riding for the 1st time in 3 weeks requires weird things of your body. I'm ok with that, but my knees hurt and my body just wasnt used to it. Riding made me happy though, and I know that I need to do it alot. So I will.

Spent the evening on my knees scrubbing the hardwood floors downstairs after my younger roomates threw a party last night. Not my cup of tea.

Classes officially start tomorrow. I have a 9 am discussion about rotting fish. I'll let you know how it goes.

Yesterday was a sad, sad day. I became a CA resident. I almost cried when I watched the young DMV kid punch a hole in Alaska id. I wouldnt have done it, but it was the right thing to do. AK doesnt have state income tax and there is actually a fund that each resident receives each year. This year, the Alaska permanent dividend fund was near $2100. On top of that, each resident is getting a $1300 energy rebate (taxing oil is big business). So I miss out on $3300 there. And it cost me $400 to register my car, smog test it, and get my license. Thats $3700. And now I suffer the shame of california id card. But it was for a good cause. The maxwell fellowship will save $9000 next year in my tuition costs if I am a CA resident for a year. Sometimes doing the right thing is hard--and expensive.

1st things 1st. A couple photos for the homefront. Annie was nice enough to bring me this shirt. Mostly this pick is for wick (refered to as small dick wick on Kblog-whats up with that kblog)?



This my cutie rockin the white hat at a Giants Padres game at AT&T park. Trying to get a pic of her is like trying to photo lock ness, its tough! Glad I was able to sneak this one. Hot track jacket girl!


SF buildings. I had my 1st weekend in and about the city the weekend. It was fun and absolutely packed. However, all that walking resulted in the best CAL track jacket find ever! Score.


This was quite a spectacle. I was circling the marin traffic circle 2 cars behind this giant moving truck. Being a highly trained naval aviator, I decided that following a 50k lb vehicle up a street that posts no vehicles over 8000 lbs was a poor plan. I quickly turned off the 24% incline and found a longer route home. When I parked on my street, I was a little perterbed to find so many people turning down my street. Traffic had increased 10 fold. I noticed most cars were stopping at the intersection before turning onto my street. I walked to the corner and looked down the hill. If you click on the pic and blow it up, you'll see the skid marks. This guy stopped just before he crested the intersection of hilldale and marin aves. He couldnt get going again and started skidding backward. He took out 2 cars behind him, a hedge, a couple mailboxes, and finally came to rest in this horrible jack-knifed position. I have no idea how he got out of the mess. Needless to say, there was a significant amount of damage and someone's household goods inside the truck were undoubtedly destroyed.

This week was crazy busy. 1st week of school was pure orientation. NO class. The UC system found a problem with actual days of class this fall, so we dont kick up again until wed. Thats a good thing because I need to become a california resident to decrease tuition by $9k. I am unhappy that I am about to lose my Alaska license plate. For the longest time I have prided myself on being an Alaskan. I guess when it comes down to it, I am unwilling to pay $9k to keep my Ak state residency. So tomorrow, I have to brave the schwartzennegger reduced CAL DMV force and convince some nice DMV worker that I deserve to be a Californian. I am having a bit of an identity crisis in that respect.

Still no insurance money from my loss.
